Thanks to my friend, Melanie, for sending this poem….

HERE'S A THOUGHT

I was shocked, confused, bewildered
As I entered Heaven's door,
Not by the beauty of it all,
Nor the lights or its decor..

But it was the folks in Heaven
Who made me sputter and gasp--
The thieves, the liars, the sinners,
The alcoholics and the trash.

There stood the kid from seventh grade
Who swiped my lunch money twice.
Next to him was my old neighbor
Who never said anything nice.

Herb, who I always thought
Was rotting away in hell,
Was sitting pretty on cloud nine,
Looking incredibly well.

I nudged Jesus, 'What's the deal?
I would love to hear Your take.
How'd all these sinners get up here?
God must've made a mistake.

'And why's everyone so quiet,
So somber - give me a clue.'
'Hush, child,' He said, 'they're all in shock.
No one thought they'd be seeing you.'

JUDGE NOT.

Remember...Just going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than
standing in your garage makes you a mechanic.

Every saint has a PAST...
Every sinner has a FUTURE..

I do not believe in the death penalty. There have been innocent people executed
for crimes they did not commit, there is no closure, and there is only a continued spiral of violence,
heartache and loss for ALL the families involved in BOTH sides of the situation. As someone who has toured
Texas to try and start the dialogue about what the death penalty is, why having the death penalty doesn't discourage
those who may murder, discussing the loss and cost to every Texas citizen, I hope that we can
stop the madness and allow everyone to know there are options to killing another person.
And, as a Christian, Jesus is the greatest example of why the death penalty should be
abolished. If you don't know much about the death penalty, please educate yourself
on all it's complexities and sides so that you can make an informed decision on
what it means to have it, and have conversations with those around you. Texas is number
FOUR in the world in terms of executions, right behind China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and then,
yes, TEXAS. We must learn to be progressive in dealing with this archaic idealogy, and it
starts with us all, each and every one of us, not being afraid to learn and talk about it.
Thank you. Sara

Lyrics to “Palin’ By Comparison” by moi, Sara Hickman

Hey, everybody!

I've had such tremendous response to my song, "Palin' By Comparison", and so many people are asking for the lyrics,
here they are:

PALIN’ BY COMPARISON
Words and music by Sara Hickman

Last week you came a – callin’
Seemin’ mighty proud
Like you’ve got all the answers
And you haven’t gotta doubt
You’re makin’ all these promises
I know you’ll never keep
I guess someone forgot to tell ya
Talk comes cheap
So I don’t buy your act
When I know the facts
About so many other women who
Took courageous leaps…

Joan of Arc went on a mission
No other teenager would take
Helped the French beat the English
She was burned at the stake!
Since1431
She’s been in movies and books
Even the pope named her a saint
For the bravery it took

So you’re palin’ by comparison
Yea, you’re palin’ by comparison
Oh, …I hate to have to be the one…
To tell ya you’re palin’ by comparison

Back in time I’ll take your mind to 1852
When Harriet Tubman knew exactly what to do
In the dark of the night she set to settin’ others free
Determined to break the chains of slavery
Thru the swamps
Without fear
And no where certain to go
She led hundreds of people home to freedom’s shores

CHORUS

Helen Keller was a woman who will really blow your mind
She couldn’t hear or speak and she was totally blind
She had a teacher who could reach her
Who taught her how to sign
She was a beacon of light
That no child should be
left behind
By learning to speak
To read and to write
With a little love you never know who’s
Waiting inside…

CHORUS (add “ooh oohs”)

Now I’m bringing up two women
That are daughters of my own
Who may grow up to call
The mighty White House their home
But whatever they decide
And wherever they go
May they always remember
What you will never know:
That it’s more than a suit
Or a smile or a wink
And you can betcha they’ll be mavericks
Who can think on their feet

CHORUS

Aspasia, Frida Kahlo, Juana Ines de la Cruz
Rosa Parks , Rosa Bonheur,
Wilma Mankiller, too…

Pearl Buck, Emily Dickinson,
Maya Angelou…
Sappho, Sojourner
…and the ruler T’zu

Gilda Radner, Carol B the wacky Lily T.,
Tina Fey, Wanda Sykes all make
Ya scream, “Whoo-pee!”

Betty Friedan, Sally Ride,
Took us to the another side
Mae West was the best
She’d come up and see ya sometimes!

Oh-prah! Madame Curie… Anne Frank…
And O’keefe…
And the little ol lady who said,
“Where’s the beef?!”
Pearl Bailey
Indira
Evita too
All these women’s names should
Mean something to you

Ani and Ellen are
Two Nice Girls
And let’s at least give Eve credit
For naming the squirrels

Josephine , Ella, Bessie, Sarah , Marian
Bonnie, Alberta and the Divine Miss M
Billie Jean, Mother Teresa,
Sacagawea, Susan B.
And, of course, we all love…Ethel and Luu-ccccy!
Last but not least
Are The Guerilla Girls
Why doncha Google ‘em up
Cuz they’ll rock your world…

CHORUS

“Sweet Songs”, produced by yours truly, to bring you and your families JUBILATION & RELAXATION!

WHAT IS "SWEET SONGS"? A cool project brought to my attention by a great mom and terrific woman, Monica Cravotta. She asked me to produce herself and 8 other women. Here's what I have to say about the album:

Nothing's more rewarding than to work with such a diverse group of loving friends, who happen to be talented musicians, with 2/3 of them mothers, as well. In producing this album, I tried to bring out the natural beauty of each woman's unique abilities, blending their voices and styles with instruments, sounds and ideas that would engage children and parents to dance, laugh, sing and relax together. Childhood passes quickly, especially in a world full of technology and distractions---so, I promise this collection of songs will make the days pass more slowly, in such a way that families can enjoy being present with one another, while building happy memories. That's what each of these songs will bring to your home---the opportunity to have tender, cheerful, sacred time together. Enjoy!

My brain, Roger, is talking like this: Willie! Cactus! Willie! Cactus!...

Yes, some of you know my brain, Roger, has a mind of it's own. Today, this is what it is saying (I'm secretly listening in):

Meeting Willie tonight!
Will Cactus be run by KUT?
Meeting Willie tonight --- OMG!
Cactus, I love you AND KUT.... your coming together... it would be the perfect solution!
Willie -- I have no idea what to wear, and I am freaking out! Dress or jeans? Feel free to call me and let me know.
Cactus! You are so glorious and forever tatooed on my heart and I will continue to speak out on your behalf... FOREVER!
Willie -- will you sing "I Wish You Well" to close out the compilation cd Sara's making to raise funds for two non-profits that help Texas kids get arts/music/theatre in schools?
Cactus --- you make everyone sound so good. You will never close. I will force Sara to chain herself to the bar, if need be!
Willie --- don't let the fact that I, Roger, dominate Sara's thoughts as I AM her thoughts. Think of it as a person who has the capacity to share her mind with herself... and others... and, simply, grow from the experience of listening to herself!
Cactus -- I, Roger, need to do a show with Sara there soon. Ah, I see! I will be doing a cd release party there in May!
Willie --- Sara listens to me and knows that you are a busy man. Therefore, she has given you much time to record the aforementioned song because the cd won't be coming out until September....and, btw, your bestest bud, Ray Benson, is doing a song. So did Marcia Ball! And Shawn Colvin! And Edie & The New Bohemians...oh, Willie! Can you make Sara's dream come true? We are counting on you.
