When we look at the current bigotry surrounding equal rights for gay people, it's enlightening to look back at backwards, regressive bigots — not in the 1950s, but as recently as the 70s. Seriously, ponder this one:In May 1970, a state commission in Mississippi voted to ban Sesame Street. A member of the commission leaked the vote to the New York Times, stating that "Mississippi was not yet ready" for the show's integrated cast.
